An exceptional, highly collectible pair of late Victorian military award field glasses (binoculars) retail-manufactured by the esteemed firm Gardner & Lyle of Glasgow, Scotland (active 1846–1891).

This outstanding historical set features beautifully detailed industrial ribbed-brass barrels and a matching fluted central focus wheel. The lower black lacquered barrels bear incredibly crisp, personalized presentation engravings detailing their direct military provenance:

Historical Significance: These field glasses were awarded as the coveted First Prize to Corporal W. Gowan of 'I' Company, 2nd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers, a prestigious citizen-soldier unit heavily involved in marksmanship competitions throughout Glasgow in the late 19th century.

Condition:
Excellent antique condition with wonderful, honest aging and natural brass oxidation. The mechanical components remain entirely functional. The dual extendable glare sunshades slide out smoothly, and the focus mechanism tracks cleanly.
